job arrays

I've recently had a couple of users ask about support for job arrays.
I've read that torque doesn't implement job arrays explicitly because
mpiexec already does. However, the closest thing to job arrays that
mpiexec does is via its -config option. Is that how people are
handling job arrays with mpiexec?

I personally don't see what explicit job array handling buys you that
simple scripting can't provide. Nor do I see why one would prefer to
use the -config option of mpiexec to realize job arrays rather than a
simple script. I certainly see the benefit of -config, but not with
respect to job arrays.

Could people educate me on how most user use "job arrays" and how best
to implement them in a torque/mpiexec environment.
