Hmm, but doesn't mpirun in the current MPICH from ANL use -machinefile 
already, and is open to similar abuse ?

Not saying that it makes it right for mpiexec to have it, but it does mean 
that it's slightly easier to port people to using it if they only need to 
change a name.

You could even replace the mpirun program they use with mpiexec, but I suspect 
that's just asking for trouble when they see different behaviour.
