We're running the same set-up here (myrinet on the compute nodes
but not on the master) and don't have any problems with mpiexec.

You can always add a 'hostname' to your batch script to verify the
command is being run on the compute nodes.  The nature of the message
looked like a myrinet problem (or a mpich->myrinet problem) that's why
I suggested running gm_board_info on any of the compute nodes.
